Anatahan Volcano Update
Anatahan Volcano Update for November 11-17
Submitted Tuesday, November 18 at 11:30 a.m. local Anatahan time
For the past week Anatahan volcanic seismicity has been low, at a level
similar to that persisting since early July. There were no apparent
eruption signals or precursory events. Tremor and seismic energy release
continue at a low level.
During the week, several distant earthquakes (teleseisms) were recorded
by the seismic network from Japan and the Aleutian Islands. However, the
only event in the Marianas large enough to be located by the USGS,
National Earthquake Information Center occurred on November 16 at 2053
UTC (November 17 at 0653 in the Mariana Islands). The magnitude-5.1
earthquake occurred about 15 km (10 miles) east-southeast of Agrigan at
a depth of 147 km.
