Anatahan Volcano Update

Anatahan Volcano Update for December 9-15
Submitted Tuesday, December 16 at 10:00 a.m. local Anatahan time

For the past week Anatahan volcanic seismicity has been very low, at a level similar to that of the past month. There were no apparent eruption signals or precursory events. Tremor and seismic energy release are at a very low level.

During the entire week, numerous tiny long-period earthquakes (LPs) were recorded on only the station near the crater, approximately one every 10 sec. All of these events were much smaller than M 0.5, with dominant frequencies of 4-5 Hz.

Also, a dozen or so tectonic events of M 3-4.2, with epicenters roughly 40-55 km north of Anatahan, were recorded over the last couple of days.
