Anatahan Volcano Update
Submitted Friday, February 6 at 1000 local Anatahan time

After more than 5 months of very low level activity, long-period earthquakes (LP's) began to occur at Anatahan on February 1. The events are increasing slowly in size, now reaching about magnitude M 2, and are becoming more frequent, up to several events per hour. These events likely result from magma degassing and/or moving beneath the recently active crater.

The Emergency Management Office, Office of the Governor, CNMI, has placed Anatahan Island off-limits until further notice and concludes that, although the volcano is not currently dangerous to aircraft, aircraft should exercise due caution in the vicinity of Anatahan.

Anatahan Volcano Update

The seismicity at Anatahan peaked just before 0600 UT today, with events occurring up to 15 per hour, then decreased dramatically but remains well above levels of the previous few months.

Anatahan Volcano Update
Submitted Sunday, February 8, 2004 at 1000 local Anatahan time

The size of the volcanic earthquakes has diminished greatly from their peak size two days ago, but the earthquakes are now occurring more often, sometimes as frequently as one per minute. The amplitude of low frequency tremor has also increased considerably. The combined effect is that the level of seismic energy release, averaged over hours, has remained nearly constant at its peak level over the last two days.

Anatahan Volcano Update
Submitted Monday, February 9, 2004 at 1000 local Anatahan time

The size of the volcanic earthquakes decreased significantly again today, and the earthquakes are essentially no longer visible on the records. The amplitude of low frequency tremor remained high but decreased some from its peak yesterday. The total daily seismic energy release decreased somewhat today from its peak during the last couple of days.
