Anatahan Volcano Update

Volcanic earthquakes remained essentially non-existent again today, and the amplitude of low frequency tremor remained at about yesterday's level, i.e. between the background level of January and peak level of February 5-7.

The episode of volcanic earthquakes from February 1 to 8 appears to have ended for now. Also, what appeared to be low frequency tremor during the last couple of days was mostly caused by inclement weather, not the volcano.

For the past day, Anatahan volcanic seismicity has been very low, at levels similar to the month of January. There were no apparent eruption signals or precursory events. Tremor and seismic energy release are at very low levels.

Volcanic seismicity occurred again yesterday during a 6-hour period, the first such seismicity since the episode of February 2-7. Short tremor episodes began at 0543 and occurred every 8-12 minutes until 1130 on the 14th. The largest was approximately equivalent to a magnitude M 2 earthquake. Since 1130 no more tremor episodes have been recorded.
