Anatahan Volcano Update for April 8, 2004

The seismic swarm that began beneath Anatahan Island on March 31
continues. The seismicity over the last 24 hours remains fairly high but
has slowly decreased over the last two days to about one-third its level
during the peak on April 6 and early April 7. From the nature of the
seismic signals, we believe that small steam and (or) ash emissions are
occasionally occurring to altitudes well below 3,000 ft (1,000 m). Contact persons:
