Anatahan Volcano Update for April 24, 2004
Submitted Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 1325 local Anatahan time

Anatahan seismic activity increased abruptly at 00:52 4/24 UTC, 10:52 4/24 local time to high levels unseen since summer 2003. These levels are 3 to 4 times as high as those of the past 6 days. This seismicity signals a significant increase in Anatahan's eruptive activity from quiet effusion of a small amount of lava to a more energetic eruption. The eruptive activity does not appear to be as energetic as the eruptions of May and June 2003. Vigorous activity at this level is continuing at the time of this report. The next seismic update will be at 07:00 4/24 UTC,17:00 4/24 local CNMI time.
