Anatahan Volcano Update for April 25, 2004
Submitted Sunday, April 25, 2004 at 1700 local Anatahan time

Anatahan seismic activity increased abruptly at 0052 4/24 UTC (1052 4/24 CNMI) to a high level unseen since summer 2003, marking a significant increase in Anatahan's eruptive activity from quiet effusion of small amounts of lava to a more energetic eruption. The eruptive activity now appears to be as energetic as some of the eruptions of mid-June 2003. Seismic activity  continues to increase slowly at the time of this report. Reports from a local helicopter about 0600 4/24 UTC (1600 4/24 CNMI) indicated a plume below an altitude of 4000 ft (1200 m) extending north-northwest of the island.
The next update will be at 13:00 4/26 UTC (23:00 4/26 CNMI).
