Anatahan Volcano Update
Anatahan Volcano Update for April 26, 2004
Submitted Monday, April 26, 2004 at 1500 local Anatahan time
Anatahan seismic activity increased abruptly at 0052 4/24 UTC (1052
4/24 CNMI) to a high level unseen since summer 2003. Since then, the seismicity increased
slowly but fairly constantly to a level similar to that of the eruption
of mid-June 2003. Starting about 2000 4/25
UTC (0600 4/26 in CNMI), the seismicity leveled off, and it
has decreased slightly over
the last 5 hours. An overflight by Juan Camacho (EMO) and Eric Hauri
(Carnegie, Margins group) at 0030-0100 4/26 UTC (1030-1100 4/26 CNMI)
observed regular puffs of yellow-brown steam and
ash every 1-2 minutes, a rate virtually identical to that of seismic
events
recorded during that time. Maximum height of the steam and ash plume has been
about
2,000 ft (600 m) during the past 48 hours.
The next update will be at 15:00 4/26 UTC (0100 4/27 CNMI). Contact persons:
