Anatahan Volcano Update
Anatahan Volcano Update for April 27, 2004

Anatahan seismic activity increased abruptly at 0052 4/24 UTC (1052
4/24 CNMI) to a high level unseen since summer 2003. Since then, the seismicity increased
slowly but fairly constantly to a level similar to that of the eruption
of mid-June 2003. Starting about 2000 4/25
UTC (0600 4/26 in CNMI), the seismicity leveled off and has remained
essentially constant to
this time. An overflight by Juan Camacho (EMO) and Eric Hauri
(Carnegie, Margins group) at 0030-0100 4/26 UTC (1030-1100 4/26 CNMI)
observed regular puffs of yellow-brown steam and
ash every 1-2 minutes, a rate virtually identical to that of seismic
events
recorded during that time. Maximum height of the steam and ash plume has been
about
2,000 ft (600 m) during the past 48 hours.
