Anatahan Volcano Update
Anatahan Volcano Update for April 27, 2004
Submitted Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at 1000 local Anatahan time
Anatahan seismic activity increased abruptly at 0052 4/24 UTC (1052
4/24 CNMI) to a high level unseen since summer 2003. Since then, the seismicity increased
slowly but fairly constantly to a level similar to that of the eruption
of mid-June 2003. Starting about 2000 4/25
UTC (0600 4/26 in CNMI), the seismicity leveled off and has remained
essentially constant to
this time. An overflight by Juan Camacho (EMO) and Eric Hauri
(Carnegie, Margins group) at 0230-0300 4/26 UTC (1230-1300 4/26 CNMI)
observed regular puffs of yellow-brown steam and
ash at 1-2 minute intervals, a rate very
similar to that of seismic
events
recorded during that time. Maximum height of the steam and ash plume has been
about
2,000 ft (600 m) during the past 2 days.
The next seismic update will be at 0000 4/28 UTC (1000 4/28 MI). Contact persons:
