Aerial view of the south side of Pu`u `O`o vent, Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i
Photograph by C. Heliker on May 6, 1997
View looking northwest shows two spatter cones erupting on the south flank of Pu`u `O`o:
  • Spatter cone in middle left of photograph
  • Small cone just south of Pu`u `O`o in center of photograph. This cone fed many short pahoehoe flows and two `a`a flows that advanced 4 km southeastward. Note that the flows are spilling over the lip of a small perched pond of lava right of the active vent (click on image to see more detail).
