| Pu`u `O`o as it looked after the last high fountaining episode
in 1986. The conduit, marked by a small spatter cone and gas
plume, is about 15 m across.

| The Pu`u `O`o conduit began to collapse in mid-1987. By the
time of this photograph in 1990, the crater was roughly 300 m
long by 200 m wide. Lava was intermittently visible at the bottom
of the crater during this time. Here lava rises on the uprift side
of the crater (right), streams across the crater floor, and pours
down a hole at the other end.
