| PROJECT DESCRIPTION | Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i is currently erupting and releases massive amounts of gas including SO2, CO2and H2S. This project includes a variety of activities related to monitoring gas composition and emissions and thermal features of the ongoing eruption. |
| VOLUNTEER DUTIES | Volunteers spend 1-2 days per 40-hour week in the field collecting fumarole gas samples, measuring SO2 emission rates, and assisting staff gas geochemists with field research projects. The remainder of their time is spent in the chemistry labs where volunteers' duties vary according to experience and interest. Duties include performing analytical chemistry procedures, constructing and maintaining monitoring instrumentation, computer data entry/management, report writing, and other project support work. |

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED |
Applicants must be at least 20 yrs old, and should either (1) be working toward a degree in the physical sciences, particularly chemistry, earth science, or environmental sciences, 2) have already completed such a degree, or 3) have equivalent work experience. Chemistry/electronics/computer nerds especially welcome. Applicants should be in good physical condition and be willing to hike over uneven ground. Applicants should not have respiratory problems such as asthma, that might be aggravated by exposure to volcanic fumes. They must provide their own field gear, including rain gear and sturdy hiking boots. |
